First of all, whenever I say the words “berry picking,” it makes me think of Sound of Music. “Frederick told you, Father, we were berry picking…..”
I’ve been wanting to take Isla berry picking for ages. We had a little strawberry plant on our balcony and she was beyond excited when it produced one little berry. When we were in the States last summer, we kept finding ourselves in the wrong place at the wrong time for finding ripe berries. So I was determined to take the girls berry picking at some point this summer.
It worked out perfectly. It’s blueberry season in North Carolina and my girls are obsessed with blueberries. They are the perfect toddler treat and since we don’t get them in Lebanon, we stuff ourselves with blueberries when we are here for the summer.
So we found a little farm where you can pick your own. It’s $2 for a pint and the sweet lady on the phone told me the kids could eat as much as they want.
Which Ruby did. :)
It was so fun – once Isla got over her fear of the beetles that were also snacking on the berries. Our city girls need to learn where their food comes from, beyond the basil on our balcony.
The berries were literally falling off the branches, and we easily filled five boxes. Now we just need to figure out how to use them. That is if they don’t all get eaten in the next day, because they are amazingly delicious!
Gotta include the artsy pic… because it was just begging to be taken….
If you are in NC and looking for a place to get cheap, juicy blueberries, check out Jeffries Blueberries in Fuquay. And does anyone in Lebanon know of a place where you can pick your own fruits or veggies??
