A dirty day in Beirut

I found a news article from 1997 that talks about the landfill in Naameh reaching capacity and constituting an “imminent environmental disaster.”

Now in 2014 the residents of Naameh have finally had enough.  Apparently all the burning of trash is causing major health problems.  So they’ve staged a sit-in, blocking access to the dump.

Which means trash trucks can’t drop off their trash.

Surprisingly it’s not stinky yet.  The Sukleen workers are dumping some kind of powder on all the trash to keep germs and bacteria from spreading.

But in some neighborhoods there’s so much trash that people are stuck in their homes.  It’s only a matter of time before people start burning it themselves and then the residents of Naameh won’t be the only ones complaining about the smoke.
