I knew things seemed expensive!

I knew things seemed expensive!

Last year when we found this apartment, Caleb made a great deal with the landlord.  He knocked $150 off of our monthly rent if we would agree to do all of the maintenance required to get the place livable.  (When I saw “we” I really mean “Caleb.”  At 7 months pregnant I was good for wiping down the outlet covers and that’s about it! :))

Caleb redid all the plumbing in the bathroom and the kitchen, had the electricity re-wired in the salon, had the whole place painted, and various other little jobs.  While we spent a good amount of money on all of that, we’ve made up for it in what we have saved on our rent this year.

When Caleb went to pay rent for this next year (no monthly rent here… it’s yearly!), the landlord’s wife was mentioning how they really wanted to sit down with us and see if we could work with them, since the housing market is so expensive right now (This all said on the open-air balcony with an AC unit running and a plasma TV :))…  basically they wanted to raise our rent.

Thankfully, we had signed a three year contract, so technically there is nothing they can do about it for the next two years, which Caleb not so subtly reminded them of.  I’m not so sure they will be as easily dissuaded next time around.

We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it, but we are always on the lookout for reasonably priced apartments to rent… because they are hard to come by!  In fact, I was just reading today that Beirut is the 10th most expensive place IN THE WORLD, for expats to find housing!!

Apparently it’s cheaper to rent a place in Amsterdam or even Paris than it is in Beirut…  seems strange, but I believe it!

Yes!

Yes!

We are official Beirut apartment renters!  We’re in the process of moving and won’t have internet for… well, until we figure out how to get it connected, so we’ll be out of the loop for awhile, but as soon as we are back online, I promise to give you the details and some pics as well! :)

Thanks for praying!

home sweet home?

home sweet home?

we have an appointment tomorrow at 4 to sign a contract on an apartment!

it’s a cute little place – it’s a bit smaller than we were hoping to find, but it’s furnished very nicely (which also means it has a fridge, oven, etc), is only 5 minutes walk from the church/language school, and is very reasonably priced!  whoo hoo!

please pray tomorrow goes smoothly… with no surprises! :)

the apartment that wasn’t

the apartment that wasn’t

we had a bit of a disappointing day today.  we had two appointments to go look at apartments… finally!  they were both within walking distance from the church, good-sized, and reasonably priced.  we were on our way out the door when we got a call telling us our appointments had been canceled.  it seems that after the landlords found out we were americans, the apartments became unavailable.   :(   it was a bit of a bummer… but it means the search is still on and we still need your prayers!

on a happier note, stay tuned for a HILARIOUS story from caleb about learning arabic from his taxi driver…

getting the week started off right

getting the week started off right

in church this morning we were actually able to follow along with the worship songs… maybe by next week we’ll actually be able to sing along!  :)

a couple of prayer requests for this week:

1. we are still looking for an apartment.  we have had a couple of leads but so far nothing has panned out.  please pray that we can find an affordable place in a neighborhood within walking distance from the church where we can practice our arabic and make good connections in the community.

2. for diligence in our arabic studies.  we have class three hours each morning and then use the afternoons to study and practice.  the studying is going well.  we’d love to find more language helpers to practice with.

3. my stomach has been rebelling against most of what i eat… please pray that it would start feeling better soon!

4. and always, that our relationship with each other and with the Lord would continue to grow!

thanks so much.  we are so thankful for such a faithful prayer team like you! :)
